Join the Company

The 3rd Florida Infantry welcomes those interested in participating in Civil War living history and reenactment. New members are encouraged to reach out with questions about expectations, events, and required equipment.

Upcoming Events

Battle of Resaca

May 15–17, 2026 (US)
Battalion Maximum — Western Union Impressions

A large event with a small-event feel. Original ground featuring trenches and earthen artillery emplacements. Always a great experience for everyone.

The guiding impression is 1861 garrison troops.

  • Blue overshirts for Fernandina Guards (Shady Grove Asylum Mess)
  • Gray overshirts (Bell’s Company)
  • Citizen’s dress for a third company, if warranted

Registration is $10.00 on site.

Officers should wear Battalion dress uniforms.

Ocklawaha River Raid

October 30 – November 1, 2026 (tentative)
Florida Horse Park — Ocala, FL

Home Guard militia impression.

  • Two battles
  • Participant fee by donation

Dade City

November 13–15, 2026
Pioneer Village and Museum — Dade City, FL

An interesting site with a great deal of potential. We have previously portrayed Federal impressions there. All four companies had at least one representative last year. The more participation we have, the more we can accomplish.

Fort McAllister

December 11–13, 2026

Join us for a unique battle reenactment held at the original earthen fort captured during Sherman’s March to the Sea.

In 2025, the battalion served in both armies, with Captain Yonce’s company portraying the Federal attacking force, while Short, Hendrix, and Vaughn served as Confederate defenders. Expectations are that this year’s organization will be similar.

By all accounts, a great time was had by all.

2027

Otter Springs

January 15–17, 2027
Otter Springs RV and Campground — Trenton, FL

State Guard impression featuring:

  • Two skirmishes
  • One battle
  • Opportunity for picket post duty prior to Saturday’s first skirmish

Battle of Olustee

February 12–14, 2027
Olustee Battlefield State Historic Park

The Battalion will be divided between Federal and Confederate impressions.

The Confederate impression represents the 1864 Department of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina (Charleston Depot). Confederate troops were reasonably well uniformed and equipped and had been serving in garrison near Charleston and Savannah.

The Federal impression represents the 1864 Department of the South. U.S. troops were well uniformed and equipped.

Battle of Natural Bridge

March 5–7, 2027
Natural Bridge Battlefield State Historic Park

The Battalion will feature multiple Confederate impressions.

  • Regular infantry will serve with Captain Bell and the Leon Rifles
  • Members interested in serving as Confederate naval personnel should inquire with Mr. Yonce
  • Veterans wishing to portray Florida militia may serve under Generalissimo Mitchell

All Florida Battalion forces will operate under the overall command of Department Commander Colonel Rominger.

Secession Garrison — Fort Clinch

March 13–15, 2027
Fort Clinch State Park — Fernandina, FL

The guiding impression is 1861 garrison troops.

  • Blue overshirts for Fernandina Guards
  • Gray overshirts
  • Citizen’s dress

Registration is $10.00 on site.

Charleston Tintype will be present to create period images.

Campaigns for the Deep South

Various battles and skirmishes representing Florida engagements.

Features include:

  • Campaign and heavy camping
  • Picket posts
  • Construction of defensive positions
  • Non-spectator woodland skirmishes
  • Public battle reenactment
  • Possible sutlers

Annual Dues

This year, a $20.00 donation is requested for Company dues during April 2026.

The majority of these funds help cover annual insurance costs while participants are in camp and on the field during events. In past years, insurance expenses have averaged approximately $500.00.

Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

Special Note: Members who have not paid their dues for field insurance coverage will not be eligible to participate in battle scenarios. Coverage provides one million dollars in protection for your benefit.

Quartermaster Update on Equipment Availability

We currently maintain a sufficient amount of equipment and black powder for our members. Weapons, uniforms, and leather gear are continuously maintained to ensure proper use and readiness.

A $15.00 donation per event is requested for the rental of a Soldier’s Kit.

At present, the 3rd Florida Company A has the resources to provide up to 20 Soldier’s Kits, if required.

Soldier’s Kits (powder and caps not included) consist of:

  • Blue or gray blouse
  • Pants (waist size required for proper fit)
  • Canteen
  • Haversack
  • Cartridge box / cap box
  • Musket with bayonet (Springfields)
  • Shirt
  • Tents

Pre-rolled cartridges and primer caps will be made available at cost.

Preparing for a Reenactment

For those new to the hobby and requiring a Soldier’s Kit, preparation is important in order to ensure an enjoyable and meaningful experience.

Please understand that at most “living history” events there are challenges to overcome, and participants will be exposed to outdoor conditions and aspects of military life.

The following suggestions may help as you begin your living history adventure:

  • Bring at least two gallons of fresh drinking water
  • A straw tick, cot, or inflatable mattress
  • Sleeping bag or at least three wool blankets
  • Food for at least two days (small cooler recommended)
  • Flashlight (or lantern with candles and matches/lighter)
  • Change of clothes and eating utensils
  • Leather shoes, either black or brown (not provided in Soldier’s Kit)
  • Toiletries kit (toothpaste, washcloth, towel, soap)

The 3rd Florida website is now available and remains a work in progress. Content will continue to be added as the site develops.

Members who have photos or suggestions are encouraged to submit them to Captain Short for inclusion in the Photo Gallery.

Uniform Update

In order to standardize our appearance as a Confederate unit, the recommended uniform will now include the Richmond Depot Shell Jacket.

Members who already possess a uniform kit are not required to purchase a new jacket unless they wish to do so.
